Cal Anderson Park

1635 11th Ave

On Thursday, August 12, at 9pm, IndieFlix is launching the new movie game, Film Festival in a Box at Cal Anderson Park! It’s a free and family-friendly event. Bring your cell phone. You’ll need it to vote!

To celebrate the official launch of the game we’re inviting the city of Seattle to come play Film Festival in a Box: Comedies.  After the public, open-air screening of the 4 Short films, everybody will vote by text message to pick the winner.  The event is appropriate for ages 5 and up, and playing time is about 1 hour. The screening will be followed by a wrap party of dessert and discussion across the street at NuBe Green!

Magnolia AV will be sponsoring this event with an incredible 12′ x 16′ screen, supplied by AV Pro, and a crystal clear Epson projector. The sound should be unbelievable as well. (McIntosh XRT1 loudspeakers w/ the MC1.2Kw amps) Hans Brackmann of Magnolia will be on hand to assist anyone with questions related to the equipment.

Film Festival in a Box (FFB) is a social gaming platform that connects people through movies.  Players will watch four short independent films and then act as a jury to determine which film will win “best of the fest in a box.”  The winners will be announced online, and winning filmmakers will be awarded a cash prize, making it a great way to support independent film.

Comedies is one of four versions of the Film Festival in a Box Game. Currently other boxes include: Powered by Girls, Pottymouth Comedies, and 4 Fantastical Short Films.

Film Festivals Key to Indie Future

Monday, December 7th, 2009

Eugene Hernandez’ article The Future of Festivals? poses some interesting questions on the future of the film festival circuit and their changing role in gaining film distribution.

“Film festivals themselves [will] become part of a distribution strategy for a film,” new Sundance Film Festival director John Cooper told Hernandez. “That’s what’s coming. It’s right around the corner.”

Film festivals have always been acknowledged as a stepping stone in getting distribution, but they can also be seen as a unique and valuable source of audience demographic information and a great place to network with others in the industry and build your fan base.

To foster that spirit, IndieFlix created Indie-fest, hopinlos_angeles_film_festival_1_origg to bridge the gap between the actual film festival and online audiences. Basically, IndieFlix strikes a bargain with the festival: they give us their top short films that they didn’t have time to show. Then, we show them for free through an Indie-fest web site powered by IndieFlix. Audiences can then log in, watch the films in their entirety and vote for their favorites. Winners can receive a a slot at the actual festival and a non-exclusive distribution deal with IndieFlix.

After we tally the votes, film festival directors and participating filmmakers get demographic information on the users who voted, which can be a great asset to any marketing strategy.

Film festivals are critical tools in the indie film world and we want to find better ways to utilize their resources (and ours) to give audiences and filmmakers what they want while broadening the independent film community, filling in the gaps between movies and their audiences.

Do you have any tips or suggestions on ways we can improve our Indie-fests?

IndieFlix Bows Distribution Model at Cannes – Home Media Magazine

IndieFlix CEO Scilla Andreen began an international tour, starting at the Cannes Film Festival in Cannes, France, to introduce its new distribution model for independent films.

The model aims to release a film via different mediums at different stages in order to maximize an independent film’s viewership against the backdrop of a film community dominated by big-budget Hollywood movies. The example used is IndieFlix’s release of Andrew Robinson’s April Showers, a narrative film based on Robinson’s experience as a student during the Columbine High School massacre in 1999.

“Given the current state of the economy and the subject matter of the film, I could not in good conscience release April Showers in a traditional way,” Robinson said at the time of the release announcement.

First, Robinson’s story was covered by media outlets, then the film was announced to open theatrically April 24 (near the 10-year anniversary of the shootings April 20), then was offered as an iTunes download for $5.99 May 5 (with $1 from each download going toward charities that support arts in education), then was later made available on DVD from New Video at http://www.indieflix.com/Films/AprilShowers for $9.95 (SRP $14.99). Filmmakers interested in finding out more about the independent film purveyor and its strategies are encouraged to visit indieflix.com.

“Our goal at IndieFlix is to showcase films that not only entertain but also utilize them as an agent for change; to raise awareness and incite people to take action and make a difference,” Andreen said at the time of the April Showers announcement.

SFFF introduces another innovation with indie-fest online film competition presented by IndieFlix

Fans and followers of the 9th annual Santa Fe Film Festival will get a long awaited piece of the action this year with the introduction of Indie-fest, the online screening competition sponsored by IndieFlix.com.

“SFFF is a festival of discovery, celebration and unwavering support of independent film. We’re very happy to be a part of a festival with such a dedication to independent innovation,” says IndieFlix.com CEO Scilla Andreen, “This is a dream I have had since the day we launched IndieFlix – let the people have a voice about what plays in our theaters from the festivals to the multiplex.”

IndieFlix developed the Indie-fest concept of screening programmed films in competition utilizing the web as a venue for the festival and letting the audience choose which feature wins the cash prize.

Indie-fest, debuted at the 2008 Seattle Int’l FF and the list of festivals participating in Indie-fest is growing.  Soon viewers will be able to watch films playing at festivals all over the world.
