This is the week for “This Is The Life”

19256Our Roy Street feature this week has also debuted on Hulu! If you haven’t seen This Is The Life,” now’s the time.

The documentary chronicles the rise of the legendary Good Life Emcees, started by a group of  Central LA teenagers in the 90s who rejected gang rap to explore the world of esoteric hip hop. The struggling youth taught each other how to eat better, live healthy and grow “like beautiful flowers out of dry ass dirt.”

This group of artists didn’t just empower their local communities – they went on to become some of the biggest names in rap and hip hop: Jurassic 5, Cut Chemist, Chali 2na, Pigeon John, Abstract Rude, CVE, Ellay Khule, 2Mex, Freestyle Fellowship, Medusa and many more. The choice to stay clean and stay out of the gang environment that dominated hip hop in the 90s greatly influenced their careers and what happens next.

“This Is The Life” is available for free streaming on Hulu, is playing at Roy Street Coffee & Tea tonight at 8 p.m., and is available for streaming and purchase at IndieFlix.
